16D15N Travel Itinerary in EUROPE (Part 6 Lucerne, Switzerland)

We finally booked the tickets for our Europe trip and went for our dream vacation for 16 days! And its our 7th wedding anniversary trip! :) Honestly, planning a long trip can be a daunting task. There is just too much information available via online platforms. But one question that comes up frequently was “How do we put this all together? Tell us where and how to start.” And our next question was, “How much does it cost to travel to six countries in Europe?” With all these information and readings that we’ve gathered for our trip, we would like to help our readers as much as we can and that’s why we are posting our six countries (UK (London), France (Paris), Switzerland, Austria, Germany & Netherlands) 16D15N travel itinerary on budget here.

Honestly, for this trip we spent around MYR9XXX/person (including return flight tickets and accommodation). All the trains and accommodation booking were pre-booked 3-4 months in advance. Our budget wasn’t very impressive, so this trip definitely belongs to the “budget travelers”. Before we book the flight tickets, we’ve decided that the best starting point would be London (UK) since the flight tickets from Penang → Singapore → London was quite reasonable for both of us. For independent travelers who don’t like to use local travel agents, and prefer to plan your own itinerary like us, this post is for you.

So, we spent 2 days in Lucerne and stayed at the ibis budget Luzern City. The starting point of the trip was definitely the central railway station (or so called Hauptbahnhof). From here you can immediately head to the main symbol of the city, the stunning Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke), the wooden bridge built during the 14th Century, symbol of the old medieval town.

Lucerne - My charming city
The Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke)

We arrived Lucerne from Grindelwald quite late. Upon arrival, we directly checked-into our hotel. For this trip to Lucerne, we decided to skip Mount Pilatus as we have already went to Top of Europe earlier. The Lucerne train station is right in the city center, about a 3-minutes’ walk from Kappelbrucke (Chapel Bridge) and 5-minute drive by bus to our hotel. Very convenient! So, what to do with two days in Lucerne (Luzern)? Take a look below at this charming city…Here’s what all you need to see! :)

Paintings represent Swiss and Lucerne historical episodes
Cross the Chapel Bridge

The following day, we set out to explore the old town.  We enjoyed visiting the Lion Monument, walking the old city walls, wandering the winding streets of the old town, walking across the river on Kappelbrucke (Chapel Bridge), Jesuitenkirche Church, built around the 17th Century and Museggmauer & Türme (Town Walls and Towers). The view over the city from the city wall was indeed spectacular!

Lucerne's most famous landmark is certainly the Chapel Bridge
One for the album
The Chapel Bridge, known as the Kapellbrücke, is possibly Lucerne’s most famous landmark. The wooden pedestrian bridge crosses the Reuss River in Lucerne’s city centre and was built in the 14th century. You can also find under the ceiling a hundred of paintings representing Swiss and Lucerne historical episodes. This covered, wooden bridge is actually the oldest one in Europe. We do recommend you to walk across bridge.

The Tower
The Nadelwehr Luzern Dam

Beautifully located right on the River Reuss, the Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier is one of the most magnificent Baroque churches in Switzerland, completed in 1677. While it is very pleasing from outside along the river promenade, the rich, unchanged interior in pink and white is what really takes your breath away.

Admire the buildings around the old town
Don't miss the typical European houses
And have a cup of coffee here
The Lion Monument

Lucerne also has picture-perfect old town. We spent hours wandering around the Old Town, Nadelwehr Luzern Dam, admiring the buildings, churches and bridges crossing the Reuss River. Next, we headed to Lion Monument, very famous monument in Switzerland.  The monument is of a dying lion, being shot with arrows, carved out of the side of a hill of rock.  It was created in memory of the death of Swiss soldiers in Paris in 1792. Mark Twain described it as the "saddest and most moving piece of rock in the world".

The old town is a charming and romantic place
