16D15N Travel Itinerary in EUROPE (Part 8 Salzburg, Austria)

We finally booked the tickets for our Europe trip and went for our dream vacation for 16 days! And its our 7th wedding anniversary trip! :) Honestly, planning a long trip can be a daunting task. There is just too much information available via online platforms. But one question that comes up frequently was “How do we put this all together? Tell us where and how to start.” And our next question was, “How much does it cost to travel to six countries in Europe?” With all these information and readings that we’ve gathered for our trip, we would like to help our readers as much as we can and that’s why we are posting our six countries (UK (London), France (Paris), Switzerland, Austria, Germany & Netherlands) 16D15N travel itinerary on budget here.

Honestly, for this trip we spent around MYR9XXX/person (including return flight tickets and accommodation). All the trains and accommodation booking were pre-booked 3-4 months in advance. Our budget wasn’t very impressive, so this trip definitely belongs to the “budget travelers”.

Before we book the flight tickets, we’ve decided that the best starting point would be London (UK) since the flight tickets from Penang → Singapore → London was quite reasonable for both of us. For independent travelers who don’t like to use local travel agents, and prefer to plan your own itinerary like us, this post is for you.

Buildings and structures in Salzburg
View of Salzburg along along the banks of the calm Salzach River
Salzburg is rich in buildings from the Gothic period onwards

The fourth destination of our Europe trip was Austria (Salzburg and Hallstatt). After all the
overwhelming beauty of Europe’s “little heart” – London, Paris and Swiss, we set out for
Salzburg – the home of the great musical genius Mozart. The most anticipated destination in
Austria was definitely Hallstatt, the fairy tale village. But then, we chose to stop in Salzburg
because it was quite close to Hallstatt, and I’ve also heard and read a lot about this place
prior to my trip. Thanks to the Salzburg travel guide clip produced by Expedia, I must admit
that Salzburg is indeed one of the most beautiful hidden charms in Europe and a charming
old town to visit.

So, our journey from Zurich HB to Salzburg Hbf took us about 5 hours+ on the train and
was supposed to change once at Innsbruck Hbf. Early tickets reservations are highly
recommended in order to save travel cost.

And so, we checked out from the hotel early and arrived Zurich HB almost 30minutes earlier
before our departure time. Early morning came the bad news that the train that we’re
supposed to board the train to Salzburg at 08:40am has been rescheduled and reroute.

We waited for almost more than an hour at the platform and finally decided to seek the
guidance of the service counter for information about our train schedule, in case we might
missed the train. We were told that the OBB train that we’re supposed to board has been
rescheduled / reroute due to some construction work at the railway.

And so, the officer at the counter rearranged our train’s route as below:
  • Zurich HB to Bludenz (09:40 am → 12:02pm) via ÖBB Train (2hrs 12mins)
  • Bludenz to Otztal (12:15pm → 13:35pm) via bus (1hr 20mins)
  • Otztal to Salzburg (13:48pm → 16:03pm) via ÖBB Train (2hrs 15mins)

Was  amazed by this beautiful piece of architecture

Arriving at Salzburg, we checked into Gasthof Auerhahn and decided to explore the centre. We made our way to the town via public buses, which were easily accessible at Salzburg Hauptbahnhof.
Salzburg Cathedral is renowned for its harmonious Baroque architecture

The Salzburg Cathedral is the most significant building in the city of Salzburg.
The tower holds the famous glockenspiel.
The main attractions  not to be missed in Salzburg (if you have limited time like us)  – Staatsbrücke Salzburg (bridge), Mozart’s Birthplace, Getreidegasse shopping street, Residenz , Franciscan Church Salzburg, Collegiate Church Salzburg and Salzburg Cathedral + Domplatz which are all nearby.

Mozart Geburtshaus (Mozart's Birthplace)

Salzburg is all about Mozart
Salzburg is all about Mozart

Salzburg is not only where the mythical Mozart lived his short life, but also the heart of Austrian theatrical art, one of Europe’s oldest preserved ancient cities. The first stop was definitely Mozart’s house, where he was born and grew up on a small street in the center of the old town. The exterior of the house is painted gold and has the words Mozart Geburtshaus.

Scenic view of Salzburg along along the banks of the calm Salzach River

The old town is a must-see, but you have lots of squares, churches, and statues to make you feel small when you’re standing in the middle. We always spent some quiet moment during the afternoon, walking along the banks of the Salzach River.

Plenty to see at Getreidegasse
Getreidegasse is the main shopping street in Salzburg, Austria
Restaurant display at Nordsee
Fish baked rice from Nordsee

The main shopping street in Salzburg
Most stores closed as early as 7.00pm

As for shopping, all the shops along the Getreidegasse shopping street, were shut at 5pm for early closing, so there was nothing to break the spell. We stopped for fish and baked rice at Nordsee.  The dish was delicious and the restaurant was incredibly authentic.
Mirabell Palace and Gardens - The Jewel of Salzburg

The following day, before we depart for Hallstatt, we took the public bus out to the main town to see the filming locations of The Sound of Music in the beautiful Mirabell Palace and Gardens, where many famous scenes were filmed.

We felt calm in this city

The streets of Salzburg are tiny. We felt the “calm” of this city. We will definitely come back!
