16D15N Travel Itinerary in EUROPE (Part 4 Schilthorn & Mürren, Switzerland)

We finally booked the tickets for our Europe trip and went for our dream vacation for 16 days! And its our 7th wedding anniversary trip! :) Honestly, planning a long trip can be a daunting task. There is just too much information available via online platforms. But one question that comes up frequently was “How do we put this all together? Tell us where and how to start.” And our next question was, “How much does it cost to travel to six countries in Europe?” With all these information and readings that we’ve gathered for our trip, we would like to help our readers as much as we can and that’s why we are posting our six countries (UK (London), France (Paris), Switzerland, Austria, Germany & Netherlands) 16D15N travel itinerary on budget here.

Honestly, for this trip we spent around MYR9XXX/person (including return flight tickets and accommodation). All the trains and accommodation booking were pre-booked 3-4 months in advance. Our budget wasn’t very impressive, so this trip definitely belongs to the “budget travelers”.

Before we book the flight tickets, we’ve decided that the best starting point would be London (UK) since the flight tickets from Penang → Singapore → London was quite reasonable for both of us. For independent travelers who don’t like to use local travel agents, and prefer to plan your own itinerary like us, this post is for you.

We traveled to Schilthorn on the second day of our trip to Swiss. Made famous by James Bond's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", Schilthorn is a picturesque summit with supreme views of the Swiss Alps.  Schilthorn is not only a place where you can admire panoramic views of the Alps, but it is also famous for being the principal filming location of one of the movies from the James Bond franchise.
Beautiful Chamois and Swiss houses perched on the hills
Beautiful Mountain Town
Mürren is a car-free village
A beautiful & quaint little village high in the Swiss Alps
Getting to the Schilthorn from Interlaken
To travel to Schilthorn from Interlaken, one must take a train from Interlaken Ost, followed by a series of trains and cable cars until you reach to the top. While there are a handful of ways to get to the Schilthorn, we opted for the Interlaken → Lauterbrunnen → Mürren → Brig and Schilthorn route.
Lauterbrunnen-Mürren mountain railway
Lauterbrunnen-Mürren Station
I personally really enjoyed the scenic ride
First, we took the train from Interlaken Ost to Lauterbrunnen. Once you’re off the train, cross the street and catch the cable car to Grütschalp. We left our luggages (after checking-out from Interlaken) at Lauterbrunnen / Mürren stations (on our way up to Grütschalp) and it’s FREE of charge.

Then board the train from Grütschalp towards Mürren. If you opt to head straight to the Schilthorn, catch the cable car in Mürren and switch to another one in Birg. Birg offers phenomenal views of the Bernese Oberland, as well as a Skyline Walk, a Thrill Walk, and a scenic bistro. From Birg, you can take the final cable car to the summit of the Schilthorn.

The Schilthorn (2970m) is a mountain peak on the opposite site of the Lauterbrunnen Valley. From here, you cam see three famous peaks: Jungfrau (Top of Europe, Eiger and Monch, as well as a 360 panoramic view of more than 200 peaks in the region. The thrill walk descends metal stairs below the restaurant onto a walkway built into the side of the cliff. One part of the walkway has a glass floor. This is definitely worth a visit in your way down. But if you are afraid of heights, you might want to skip this. Honestly, my legs were shaking the entire time. This is an experience not to be missed if you are in Swiss!
From Stechelberg take the cable car up to the Schilthorn adventure

Enjoy the most beautiful panoramic view to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau here
We loved just walking through the streets of Mürren. The view at Mürren was plenty spectacular! We strolled through the village and its surrounding area. The views to the mountain peaks and glaciers were indeed breathtaking. With its majestic mountains, charming little villages, and unspoiled nature, Mürren is definitely one of my favourite regions in Switzerland.
A country surrounded by the high peaks of the Alps
Lying at the foot of the Schilthorn, Mürren has nevertheless remained a cosy mountain village

P/S: We highly recommend travelers to book a Mountain View room in Murren. You'll get spectacular views of the mountains and the Lauterbrunnen Valley. The entire journey took us about 90 minutes. We stopped by Murren on our way back before we proceed to Grindelwald. Stay tuned for our next posts on Grindelwald-Jungfraujoch!
